about
Having followed a career in the visual arts, specialising in sculpture and ceramics, it may have seemed an odd choice to start digging London gardens in my mid-forties. The truth is, I felt liberated from the confines of my studio walls and increasingly enjoyed the open skies that scorched in the summer and froze fingers on crisp
winter mornings. The latter, I often joke to my assistants, is the best time to be out and connecting with the elements.
Originally from the Midlands, we upped sticks and moved to Pembrokeshire. The young friends I made enjoyed the mischief of wandering the coastline with its combination of rock pools, verdant cliff tops and woods. We would often dam beach streams and I, although ridiculed for it, enjoyed identifying and pressing wildflowers. These memories have left an indelible imprint that have informed my gardens and artworks in an abstract form, since I have moved to the city.
