I have always picked up a pencil to sketch ideas. In some cases, the essential measurements of a plan view can evolve into an artwork; more of a feeling towards the new garden, what plants to keep, a conversation with the client or a response to the colour and texture of a natural stone. Sometimes these sketches can be rendered into a sculptural maquette using scraps of a chosen material, or to produce a more traditional architectural model.
